In this dark and stunning masterpiece, a stepmother tries to save her stepdaughter, Jenufa, from entering an unhappy marriage. When Jenufa becomes pregnant out of wedlock, the stepmother acts desperately to save Jenůfa — and herself — from shame and humiliation. A study of female resistance in the face of social cruelty.
