Community Service Opportunities for Teens at Mattituck-Laurel Library
- Sending Smiles - Decorate postcards provided by the library with happy and positive messages for sick children in hospitals. The library will provide the postcards; however teens must have their own markers, colored pencils or crayons for this project. 1 hour of community service will be given for every 10 postcards that are completed and submitted.
- Braided Dog Toys - Use old t-shirts to create braided dog toys for local animal shelters. Please bring the completed dog toys to the library and we will drop them off at the shelter. We will use the honor system to determine how much time was spent completing this project.
- Letters to Veterans - Write 2 hand-written letters to our veterans to earn 1 hour of community service.
- Kindness Rocks - Decorate rocks with kind and positive messages to be placed around the library and in our rock garden. 1 hour of community service will be given for every 3 rocks that are decorated. See Sara if you need rocks.
- Bookmarks - Decorate bookmarks for our patrons to take at check out. Please be sure to use cardstock paper or construction paper for this project. The library can provide paper and templates for this project. 1 hour of community service will be given for every 12 bookmarks completed.
- Community Service Bingo - Pick up a community service bingo sheet at the reference department or call us and we can email it to you! Be sure to take a selfie of you doing each of the tasks marked off on the bingo board in any row, diagonal or column and tag us on our teen Instagram account @matt_teens. Then, follow our page. You will earn 1 hour of community service for completing these tasks.
- Follow Us - Follow our Facebook page under the name Mattituck Teens and our Instagram account @matt_teens for 1 hour of community service!
- Book Reviews - Write a book review of any YA novel in the library’s teen collection. Write one paragraph summarizing the book and one paragraph indicating whether you would recommend this book to a friend and why/why not.
- Cards for Seniors Use paper and markers or colored pencils to make the seniors at the senior center uplifting cards. Write a funny joke in the card or put positive quotes inside and draw bright, colorful pictures.
Regents Review Classes – Available to All Students Across the North Fork
Space is limited and these classes fill up quickly. If you are signed up and cannot make it, please call the host library in advance so that we can call other students on the waiting list who would like to attend. Registration is required at the host library, and begins May 20:

Attention Graduating Seniors! The Friends of the Mattituck-Laurel Library offer scholarships to teens who are graduating in the spring with plans to attend a college or university in the fall. Scholarship applications are available in the Teen Lounge and online HERE. Candidates must be a resident of Mattituck or Laurel and have demonstrated involvement with the library. Application deadline is April 13, 2019.
Mattituck-Laurel Library's Teen Services offers a selection of materials and programs designed especially for teens entering 7th through 12th grade. Our teen collection offers a selection of materials written especially for teens, including fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, audiobooks, and magazines.
